2017 Goals Update

I just did my little write-up after my first half marathon, so I suppose now would be as good a time as any to hammer out an update on my 2017 goals and resolutions.  I’ve accomplished more than I realized – I suppose, the benefit of 7 months passing already – but in some areas I do still need to ramp things up – only 5 months left in the year!

  • 1000 miles challenge (ilovetorun.org) – 56.5%
    • Run, walk, crawl, etc., a total of 1000 miles for the year.
      • Where I’m at :  I am almost back on track here – 565.1 miles for the year so far.  I need to pick up the pace just a bit, and I will certainly be doing that simply due to training.  I now have 3 more half marathons and 1 full before the year “runs” out.  I’ve got a lot of work to put in, and cross training miles like cycling don’t count towards this goal.  This leaves me at ~56.5% of my goal today, and I’ll need to log on average 87 miles per month for the rest of the year.  I should no longer have any sub-100-mile months, so this goal should be easy peasy.  Barring any injuries (such as the issues that sidelined me for 2 weeks in June), I should knock this one out of the park!  If you’d like to follow my Runkeeper, please add “KungFuRocket.”
  • 12 new recipes used – 33%
    • I love cooking, and I have lots of cookbooks.  My goal is to try at least one new recipe per month for the year, and not remain in my “comfort zone” of recipes that I’m used to making.
      • Where I’m at : I’m quite behind on this one, unfortunately – with time limitations, I’ve found myself reverting to “tried and true” quick-and-easy faves. So far, I’ve done 4 recipes (blog posts later).  Nutrition plays a big part in my running, so I need to focus on improving that.  I have some ideas to try in August now, we’ll see how it goes.
  • Complete at least one new Udemy course – 100%
    • I’ve lined up several interesting Udemy courses, but continued to delay my own progress and procrastinate, giving various excuses why, so I’m working to ensure I get the ball rolling.
      • Where I’m at : I have completed 2 courses, and am looking at others.  This one is done, but I’ll continue to try and grow as time allows.
  • 12 blog posts for the year – 25%
    • Initially stated so I could post more regularly, I do still want to hit this number even though this is my first post, and it’s March… Regardless, I’m sure I can complete this goal, I just want to ensure my posts have legitimate content.  Since it ties into my other goals, I don’t think that this will be a problem.
      • Where I’m at : I am behind. This has been a busy year – and some things are taking longer than expected.  Regardless, this is now my 3rd post, and I have content lined up – I just need to make sure I set aside the time to do it.  I won’t count any junk posts, these must have merit on their own.
  • 2 “photo challenges” completed – 0%
    • Since photography has dropped in priority for me, I wanted to circle back and ensure I completed at least 2 photo challenges.  Most likely, these will be 30-day challenges, but any “photo challenge” will suffice. Each will result in a respective blog post.
      • Where I’m at : Well, I have nothing done here yet.  I’ve renewed some of my photography interest – especially with some macro work recently, but finding and making the time, and finding the lighting that I want?  I have put that mostly on the backburner but will pick it up as time allows.  I should review “photo challenges” now to plan ahead and keep my eyes open for subject matter
  • 1 half marathon complete by end of July – 100%
    • I set this goal in December, 2016.  It seemed insurmountable to me, and I wanted to give myself plenty of ramp-up time to train and prepare for something of this nature – both mentally and physically.
      • Where I am at : This one is done – I did put some info about it here, but didn’t think an in-depth timeline would be interesting.  Perhaps when I run my full marathon, I’ll break down my process mile by mile in the write-up.  Now, even though I completed my first half marathon, I want to improve upon that before the year is out.  I have signed up for 3 more half marathons, I just need to ensure I maintain my base, don’t get injured, and get enough rest.  I want to finish a half marathon under 2:10 before the year is done.
  • 3 miles within 30 minutes by end of year – 100%
    • I know I’m slow, so I wanted to aim for a 10-minute mile pace by end of year.  In my initial “runs” I was about the same speed as walking, and I thought I would never be able to do 10-minute miles for any amount of time – it was pretty embarrassing but you know what? It doesn’t matter.  Everyone has to start somewhere, right?
      • Where I am at : Current 3 mile PB is 8:59 pace. Will try to keep improving this.

The Beginning

I can do this

These were the words running through my mind around 8:00 AM on July 23, 2017.  I was shuffling around at the starting corrals of the 2nd half of the San Francisco marathon, trying to stay warm in the cool, foggy patch of Golden Gate park.  I was nervous.  I’m no stranger to sporting events; however, running has never been my forte, nor has it ever been something I particularly looked forward to.  I didn’t feel prepared, but Continue reading “The Beginning”

2017 and Me

Ah, 2017.  It’s hard for me to believe that it’s already March.  Time really is relative – a few months in time is an ever-decreasing percentage of our total lifetime, and it certainly seems to fly by now!  Many of my New Year’s Resolutions are under way, but I’ve avoided and neglected the blog.  There were many reasons for that (hosting issues, code issues, db issues), but in the end, I suppose they are really just excuses.   Normally, that might bother me – but considering how I’ve prioritized things this year, I’m really not sweating it.  In fact, I will outright state Continue reading “2017 and Me”
